A COMMUNITY in mourning has began a fundraising drive for popular Steven Campbell who died after he was struck by a vehicle.

A JustGiving page has been set up to raise funds for the family of the 27-year-old who died in the town at the weekend.

It is alleged that Steven was deliberately hit by a white Ford Transit van in the early hours of Saturday morning in Burnhill Street.

The dad-of-three, who is known as Stevie, was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he later died. He was with two friends, a man and woman, who were not injured in the incident. They, however, were left extremely distressed by what happened.

Glasgow Times:

Katie Curran hopes to raise £1,000 for the family he leaves behind.

A statement on the page reads: "The scheme has lost another young boy who has three gorgeous kids and I thought it would be good if we all pulled together, and gave his wee kids a wee bit of money for a wee holiday or for whatever they want."

The latest tribute comes after we reported yesterday on the community leaving flowers, football tops, scarves and messages of mourning at the scene where he was hit which is in an area where Toryglen meets Rutherglen.

Robyn McGill, believed to be his girlfriend, left an emotional tribute.

In a message on flowers, she said: “My babe, I can’t get your cheeky wee face out my head.

“Honestly doesn’t feel real, you meant the world and more to me.

“You put a smile on everyone’s face and I will keep you smiling.

“You will never be forgotten. I love you so much.”

Daniel McCafferty appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday where he made no plea in relation to the death of Steven Campbell.

The 33-year-old from Rutherglen faces a further charge in connection with the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

He has been committed for further examination, and will be remanded in custody until his next appearance within eight days.
