Residents of upmarket Giffnock have slammed the decision to open a Lidl supermarket.

The chain is to move into the site of former Whole Foods Market after it closed suddenly last year.

One local said the German store would 'bring down the tone of the whole area' and described it as a 'sad day'.

The Evening Times reader wrote on the post announcing the change: "This is disgraceful news. The opening of this store will bring down the tone of the whole area.

"I’m disappointed that M & S have not followed up with their initial interest, perhaps locals should have lobbied them. A sad, sad day.

Cate Simmons continued: “100% serious. Stores like this (cheap food, cheap alcohol) attract the degenerates of society."

Another added: "Completely and utterly outrageous! There is no demand for a Lidl in Giffnock. It is only going to attract vermin that do not belong in this prestigious area."

Gary Young wrote: "People from neighbouring Castlemilk will flock to it for the cheap basement bargains.."

Others were quick to add that they would welcome the addition.

Davie Smith, said: "I hope Lidl change their mind and Poundland open instead."

Christopher Quinn, wrote: "Your heads up your a***, Lidl has one of the best bakery sections bar none, best chicken, and meat, at half the price of M&S."

Majid Wahid, said: "Nothing wrong what type of shop is going to be open look at the opportunity for workers. Look at the opportunity for competition against the big four who have been overcharging for years.

"Look at the saving how posh family's n working class family's are in the same boat to save money or work to a budget. But small minds will only bridge the gap in ignorance."

Lidl announced it is to take over the purpose-build unit previously occupied by Whole Foods.

It plans to refurbish the chain, installing an in-store bakery, creating up to 40 new jobs.

Whole Foods shut its doors for good in November last year, despite a campaign from locals hoping to save it from the axe.
