HIKE and bike around Loch Lomond this spring and raise some much needed funds for one of the country’s leading neurological charities.

The Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA) has secured places on a seven-mile hike along the West Highland Way and 35-mile cycle through the Trossachs.

It is the only charity in the country supporting families living with the degenerative neurological condition, Huntington’s disease (HD).

The event, organised by Sports Ecosse, starts and finishes at the Rowadennan Hotel on May 26.

Participants will either walk or run from Rowardennen along the banks of Loch Lomond to Inversnaid, pick up their bike and cycle back via Aberfoyle and Drymen.

Bag and bike transfers will be laid on by event organisers as well as snack stops along the way. The route will be marshalled to ensure no one gets lost.

SHA fundraising officer Linda Winters said: "This is a great event to do as a competitive team event or just as a family day out. All we are asking is that you commit to raising a modest £150 to support our work."

SHA supports HD families through a team of specialists, a dedicated youth support team and a financial wellbeing service.

HD is a complex neurological condition with symptoms that typically begin to develop between the ages of 30 and 50. Those impacted by HD may eventually lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink or make decisions and will eventually need 24-hour care. It is also hereditary with each child of those diagnosed at 50 per cent risk developing the disease. There is currently no cure.

It is estimated there are around 1,100 people living with HD in Scotland and up to 6,000 potentially at risk.

Linda added: "This event that will attract more than 100 runners and riders so it should be a really great day out, We are delighted to have been able to secure some places but they are likely to go quickly as places for this event are in high demand."
